Church Hymnals – the Devil’s Book!

A number of years ago I wrote a screenplay which was a very thinly veiled allegory of the Easter story, wrapped in a political commentary. The essential premise of the film was that Homeland Security was overseen by Satan himself, and if Jesus were to show up in the US now, he’d be tried and convicted as a terrorist. For the sake of this entry, that’s all you need to know about the film . . . except that I won a few accolades for the screenplay, and because this is my column and I’ll brag if I want to. Plus, as a Pastor it’s fun to find creative ways to talk about hymnals, and pew Bibles, and other church stuff without coming off too preachy – Ha! A pastor who isn’t preachy.
Are Hymn Books Legal?
One of the pretty important sections in the film took place in what was to resemble the research wing of a plush and flush law office contained within a larger corporate complex. I had a friend who loaned us the the whole office complex of a distribution facility for filming, which was a great way to save money since we had no budget in the first place. The only problem was the lack of shelves lined with impressive looking books in several of the offices. With no money, we were in a bit of a quandary, and the film crew and I began to brainstorm how to fill the shelves without spending any of the cash we didn’t have. It was our director of photography (DP) who had the best idea.
“How do you feel about hymnals?”
“Hymnals?” I asked. “Hymnals with songs inside? The stuffy moth ball smelling kind?”
“Yeah, hymnals for church. They look like important books, right?”
“I suppose so, but where are we going to get hymnals?”
“My church has a whole closet full from where they got new ones last year. We could borrow them.”
I thought about this for a moment, and then asked one final question.
“How will they film? Will they all be the same?”
“Of course they will,” she replied. “But law libraries have volumes that look alike, right? So we’ll just cover them in wrapping paper or something cheap in sets of twenty or twelve or whatever.” She was a genius.
On Friday night before the shoot, we called the unsuspecting cast and crew together for a project. We plopped down around a big pool table and our DP dumped out a few dozen hymnal books and brought us some vintage (read: old) wrapping paper.
“Aren’t hymnals for church?” our leading lady asked.
“Not today they aren’t! Today, they’re law books. Start wrapping these covers!”
The next morning, we fabricated what looked like a sizable law library for our federal caricature of Old Slewfoot by filling the shelves with our freshly wrapped songbooks.
Bow to The Audience
Despite the solid performances of our actors, for those of us who knew, Irony was the star of the scene. Who knew songs about God could also be songs about The State of Confusion vs J Q Public? God knew, we all knew, but none of us cared. Is it ok then to deface any of the church property without regard to its intended purpose? Of course not, in this case however, the old general hymnals were in fact put to some very good use, making the old general hymnals feel valued once again.
You probably will never use your church’s old hymnbooks to represent the State of Wherever Volumes one through twent-six. This church was doing what most do – trying to think of something besides the dumpster. If that’s your church, consider donating them to a denominational regional office. New churches plants would appreciate the donation. Save them a few bucks, and re-circulate those old guys.
New music is written all the time, and nothing is worse than visiting a church where they are still using hymnals autographed by Fanny Crosby. So if you are looking to upgrade or update, shop one of the Christian bookstores online and save 20-50% on the newest volumes. The Doom Of My Funny T-Shirts

As an extensive collector of funny t-shirts, it seems that I have accrued quite a closet full over the last few years. Perhaps I should be on that show “Hoarders”, only instead of cats I have shirts that make the bar in my closet bow from the weight of it. It’s not like it really matters all that much what I do with them, but I can’t just throw them out. I have to think of some creative ways to get rid of them, because the local charity stores won’t take lots of the funny t-shirts I have that have cursing on them. Perhaps it will be better if I just brainstorm for a bit.
There is a website called EBAY where the most wonderful items can be bought for a relatively cheap price. One of these items happens to be a fully-functional, gently-used t-shirt cannon. Excuse me, but did you not hear me correctly? I said “t-shirt cannon.” A weapon that shoots a t-shirt at 4 million miles an hour into stadium crowds using pressurized air. This cannon can be used, say, from the passenger side of my best friend’s ride to give the poor and destitute free, funny t-shirts personally. They might get a bruise or two, but who can be angry after they get free t-shirts?
Maybe I’m letting some inner anger over being forced to get rid of my funny t-shirts bubble up with that whole “shooting homeless people with free shirts” idea. Maybe I need to redirect that internalized anger outward into something fun and exciting. Since a huge portion of my funny t-shirts are white tees, I could give them away to guests at my wet t-shirt party bonanza! Each guest will be issued one water gun and one white tee for the evening. Add some delicious booze, and watch things get crazy! That, my friends, is a great idea.
The last time I checked, I’m pretty sure I wasn’t an old southern lady. However, would it be weird for me to say that I’ve thought that quilting might be a pretty awesome way to put my old funny t-shirts to use. I don’t know the first thing about quilting, but could you imagine how awesome that would be? Imagine cutting out the center design of all of my old funny t-shirts and making this huge quilt from them. It would probably be the greatest quilt ever made. All I have to do is learn how to quilt. On second thought, maybe paying some old lady on food stamps to do it would be better.
I just came to a realization. Not only am I really cool for owning so many funny t-shirts, but I am also a borderline genius. I haven’t even tried that hard, and I have three super ideas to bring to my girlfriend in order to get rid of these funny t-shirts of mine. I may have a college education now and I may be in a serious relationship, but I hope she goes for the wet t-shirt party idea. I suddenly got that weird feeling that I get sometimes when my girlfriend is staring at me with her eyebrows all scrunched together. She’s probably reading this over my shoulder.

Being insane is fun. You don’t have to worry about what other people think because they’re usually thinking that you’re crazy…which is okay, since you are.
