Assuming your purpose for wanting to learn the skill is simply for to improve your relationship with others and how you relate with people, what should you do to develop the talent?
First of all, seek the company of your family and friends. Observe how they laugh and for what reasons they are laughing. Who is the person whom everybody acknowledges as the funny guy? How does he deliver his pieces? Does he laugh at his own jokes? Does he maintain eye contact with anyone? What about his actions? Does he look awkward in his gestures? Does he use facial expressions when delivering his jokes or is he pan-faced? These are just some of the things that you need to take into account when observing how people make other people laugh.
Who would have thought that simply bonding with friends could already teach you about the ability to make others laugh? When you hang out with people who have a positive disposition in life, somehow what they consider as fun rubs off on you until it becomes a natural thing for you. In addition, they are also the ones who will out rightly tell you whether the joke was a success or a bomb. If you see that the joke elicited lots of laughter from them, then maybe it is about time to try it out on other people.
Another source of material for learning how to make people laugh is through joke books. When I say joke books, I am not referring to the book that contains possible material for your jokes but rather the techniques that these types of books offer. These are very helpful because these books share popular practices followed by more established comedians when they were still studying. In fact, some have even worked first-hand with comedians and what they share are methods that they have observed comedians follow.
Joke books supposedly makes one laugh and if there is one joke that really made you laugh, then memorize it. Practice in front of the mirror and when an opportunity arises, try the joke on your family or friends. See their reactions. Did they find the joke funny? Was your delivery correct? If they did laugh, then you have done a good job understanding and applying the methods you have learned. Otherwise, just keep on practicing until you master the tricks.
Improvisation is another trick that you should learn in order to be successful at making people laugh. You can get material from your everyday experiences, simply add some exaggerated actions to complete the act, and voila! You have your distinct material already. What you just have to work on thoroughly is delivery, which is the most important aspect of learning how to make people laugh.

In January 2011, Tom Mele and LJ James came up with the crazy idea of being on the Radio together! The Show Started off at Long Islands Oldest Radio Station WGBB 1240 AM with the idea of doing a Radio Show in a classic style but at the same time it would be a party! The idea was to throw a party and invite everyone on Long Island and see who showed up!
After just over a month, Tom and LJ where in talks with one of Long Islands Premier FM Rock Stations, to bring their brand of insanity to FM Radio. LJ and Tom came up with the idea to take the Saturday Morning 8am to 10pm spot and make the show a Long Island Saturday Morning Comedy Radio Show for the hard working Men and Women of Long Island who need to work Saturdays to keep Long Island Running.
Tom and LJ gambled that if Monday through Friday Morning Shows where so successful why not a Saturday morning Show? The Show brought to its listeners every Weekend The best Events happening on Long Island, it Spot Lighted Local LI shops and businesses, Interviews with well known and not so well known Long Islanders , Live in Studio each Week the best talent from the LI Music Scene and Long island news and Off the wall Comedy in the way only Tom Mele and LJ James could bring you. Soon the Show was reviewed as ‘The greatest thing to happen to Saturday Mornings since Cartoons”
Things went great and the listening audience grew faster then anyone could have hoped for. The Party was getting Crazy. It seemed everyone was showing up to be a part of it! Things seemed perfect.
At first there where just a few Suggestions from the Stations management, little things like play more of this band, How to sign on and off, nothing out of hand. Then it seemed everyone had a suggestion and then everyone wanted to be involved and tell them how to run the show. All of a sudden there where just too many different people from the Stations management involved trying to make The Long Island Old School Radio Show what they thought it should be.
Even now no one is sure if it was because these people wanted credit for the success of the show or what the reason or logic was behind it all. Because of it Chaos ensued. After much talking LJ and Tom realized as much as they both Loved being on a well known Long Island FM Radio Station and making Saturday Mornings a bit better for all the hard working Men and Women of Long Island, They could not continue with the Stations demands and interference with the show. After talking to the Stations owner, it broke Tom and LJs heart but they parted ways with Long Islands 2nd best Rock Station.
Right away LJ and Tom started going to meetings looking to bring the show some where else. Before they could even get their feet on the ground and catch their breath, Tom and LJ got the phone call that Marc Hauptman the shows web designer, Board operator and close personal friend had crashed on his Motorcycle and was gone!
Have you ever seen the yin and yang symbol? There is a thin line in the middle that keeps yin and yang separated. That line was Marc always between Tom and LJ. With out Marc every thing just blended together into one big mess!
For a while things looked as if the party was over and the Boys would go their separate ways. There where phone calls and meetings with production companies about Radio Shows and TV Shows. With the lose of Marc so fresh neither Tom nor LJ really had their hearts fully into the meetings and it seemed as if they all wanted too much creative control.
After a while Tom and LJ started talking again about a Show and what they wanted to do, neither where ready to do the same type of show again right away. They talked about something different the idea of doing an online show started forming. They told each other that by doing an online show They would have full creative control and they would own everything! After hours of brain storming they came up with a new name for the show “The Tom and LJ Show” With only a very basic idea of what they where doing Tom and LJ started inviting everyone to the new party!.
In truth the online show was more for Tom and LJ to find there way with out Marc in between them. Because both Tom and LJ are too stubborn, or too stupid to give up. Most people who know them would say its 50/50.
Soon Tom and LJ received a call from a guy named Vince Alcarese who said he had the skills and the drive to help them take the online show to the next level. Vince met with LJ and Tom and showed them what he could do. Vince had done Pod cast shows for years and had experience! Vince was also very different then Marc and was exactly what the show needed. There would be no replacing Marc, but there was now a way to move on with the show in Marc’s Memory as He would have wanted. Soon Vince was part of the Family and as the shows them song says the Boys where Back in Town!
Things have grown and changed a lot in just over a year the “LI Old School Radio Show” in now “The Tom and LJ Show” and the Tom and LJ Show is now under “Madhouse TV”(MadhouseTV.com) with many new shows looking to come on board with them !
Tom and LJ have had as many ups and downs in just one year as some shows threw in 10 years, the Boys have shown they have the true spirit of the entertainment world and that no matter what the up coming years may thrown at them “The Show must always go on!”
Tom and LJ have built a State of the Art Studio an with Vince running the Controls. They do a weekly show on Thursdays at 8pm EST. The show might not be for everyone, but for Tom , LJ , Vince and the Thousands of fans who tune in for a Show so out there it can not be defined, it is a #1 Hit !
Is a return to Long Island Saturday Mornings a Possibility for Tom and LJ ? No one can say for sure. But the one thing we do know is that these Boys never left Town. !!!

The UK prides itself on its comedic talent, boasting crops of classic and emerging heroes and heroines of the funny business throughout the ages. From the Two Ronneis to Tommy Cooper, from Billy Connolly to Bill Bailey; the reputation of Britain’s mirth-making has seen us through two world wars and a fistful of recessions with a few laughs along the way.
However, a recent poll by social networking site Badoo has found that the UK was voted fourth most un-funny country in the world, behind Poland, Belgium and Canada. To add insult to injury, Britain was polled as less funny than America, possibly the worst indignity to suffer. Well, stiff upper lip and all that jazz, but what makes 30,000 people in fifteen countries across Europe think Britain is so humourless?
We have tried our level best, giving the world high-brow Oxbridge slapstick by Stephen Fry and Rowan Atkinson. We have produced honest and loveable flat-cap and whippet types like George Formby. We have represented the common man with acts such as Peter Kaye and Bernard Manning tapping into the heart of working-mens-club drollery for generation after generation. British comedy at its heart is about representing its people, in all forms and however big, bad and ugly. Pompous? Perhaps. Politically incorrect? Sometimes? Vaguely smutty? Always. But UK comedy reflects the wordish, bone-dry and razor-sharp wit of the actual British public, not a roomful of TV executives.
Just putting it out there, is it at all possible that America’s rating has more to do with its conglomerate monopolisation of our global airwaves than its actual talent for laughter as a nation? How is it that tired old formats and repetitive programming like Big Bang Theory (geeks and one hot blonde) and Will and Grace (gay best friend again?) are held in higher esteem than some of the best and most intelligent, challenging comedy that the UK has to offer?
If British humour isn’t that funny, why do shows like The Office and Shameless end up being regurgitated and tweaked for the Yankee masses, to the greatest of acclaim? It’s because our raw talent and ever-evolving comedic discourses are admired the world over and that quirky, acerbic wit unique to UK humour can’t be matched. You can also add your sources of humor by reading humorous materials such as comic books, magazines and books written by your favorite authors. Good books to read include those written by: Woody Allen, Bill Bryson, Stephen Fry and Douglas Adams. When you read all this material you are assured of having a funny thing to say in any situation that you are faced with.
What made you laugh once will always manage to get you laughing again. This is true about books that you read when you were a kid back in lower grade. The cartoon strips, comic books, joke books and other funny books that you liked reading since they made you laugh are great material to have in your possession. When you are reading them, you will be able to understand what makes them funny. As a result, you will be able to write your own jokes that you can get your audience laughing with.
Birds of the same feathers flock together. In short, funny people stick together. If you want to learn how to be funny then get some new friends who have a sense of humor. Having funny friends around you is the easiest way of learning how to be funny. Why? Their humor will rub off on you. The Doom Of My Funny T-Shirts

As an extensive collector of funny t-shirts, it seems that I have accrued quite a closet full over the last few years. Perhaps I should be on that show “Hoarders”, only instead of cats I have shirts that make the bar in my closet bow from the weight of it. It’s not like it really matters all that much what I do with them, but I can’t just throw them out. I have to think of some creative ways to get rid of them, because the local charity stores won’t take lots of the funny t-shirts I have that have cursing on them. Perhaps it will be better if I just brainstorm for a bit.
There is a website called EBAY where the most wonderful items can be bought for a relatively cheap price. One of these items happens to be a fully-functional, gently-used t-shirt cannon. Excuse me, but did you not hear me correctly? I said “t-shirt cannon.” A weapon that shoots a t-shirt at 4 million miles an hour into stadium crowds using pressurized air. This cannon can be used, say, from the passenger side of my best friend’s ride to give the poor and destitute free, funny t-shirts personally. They might get a bruise or two, but who can be angry after they get free t-shirts?
Maybe I’m letting some inner anger over being forced to get rid of my funny t-shirts bubble up with that whole “shooting homeless people with free shirts” idea. Maybe I need to redirect that internalized anger outward into something fun and exciting. Since a huge portion of my funny t-shirts are white tees, I could give them away to guests at my wet t-shirt party bonanza! Each guest will be issued one water gun and one white tee for the evening. Add some delicious booze, and watch things get crazy! That, my friends, is a great idea.
The last time I checked, I’m pretty sure I wasn’t an old southern lady. However, would it be weird for me to say that I’ve thought that quilting might be a pretty awesome way to put my old funny t-shirts to use. I don’t know the first thing about quilting, but could you imagine how awesome that would be? Imagine cutting out the center design of all of my old funny t-shirts and making this huge quilt from them. It would probably be the greatest quilt ever made. All I have to do is learn how to quilt. On second thought, maybe paying some old lady on food stamps to do it would be better.
I just came to a realization. Not only am I really cool for owning so many funny t-shirts, but I am also a borderline genius. I haven’t even tried that hard, and I have three super ideas to bring to my girlfriend in order to get rid of these funny t-shirts of mine. I may have a college education now and I may be in a serious relationship, but I hope she goes for the wet t-shirt party idea. I suddenly got that weird feeling that I get sometimes when my girlfriend is staring at me with her eyebrows all scrunched together. She’s probably reading this over my shoulder.
