Rachel Maddow smacks down Republican hack David Frum

Rachel Maddow sparred with former Bush speechwriter/National Review contributor David Frum, after Frum thought he’d cleverly ambush Maddow with the accusation that she was contributing to the low tone of the political discourse.

MADDOW: You have publicly stated some reservations about John McCain and criticisms about the way his campaign is run, even though you have also said that you will vote for him. One quote I wanted to ask you about. You said, “Those who press this Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that’s going to be very hard to calm after November.” What do you mean by that, in that word, “fury.”
FRUM: Well, I think that you were talking through much of the show about the matter of tone in our politics. And yet, we are seeing, I think, an intensification of the ugliness of tone that has been a feature of American politics for the past eight years. I mean, this show, unfortunately, is an example of that problem.

Basically, Frum objected to Maddow’s injection of humor and sarcasm into her show as an example of how political culture was circling the drain. Maddow, obviously, had some disagreement with this contention, suggesting that her use of comic effect was not in any way equivalent to say…calling for someone’s head on the campaign trail.

Of course, Frum seems to have a problem with political comedy in general. Back in July, he took to his “Diary” to caterwaul over the way Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert treat the conversation:

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert obviously see themselves as something more than ordinary funny men. Recall Stewart’s memorable scolding of Crossfire for hurting America; remember Stephen Colbert’s preachy appearance at the White House correspondents dinner. They think something is very wrong with cable news, and so they satirize that wrong.

In making their point, they themselves violate every kind of journalistic ethical rule. They say, “It’s OK for us – we’re fake news.” That’s a convenient excuse. But it’s not really an adequate one.

Yes! It’s almost as if The Daily Show and the Colbert Report have an established, intrinsic comedic conventions that are a thing apart from the two men’s appearances in all other fora! And because they don’t adhere to those conventions ALL THE TIME, like on Crossfire, or at the Duane Reade, they are violating some journalistic ethics.

Frum went on to say:

A few days ago, Colbert scoffed at my friend David Brooks for referring to the “salad bar” at Applebee’s – when Applebee’s doesn’t feature salad bars. An error – how ridiculous! But conscious fabrication? I guess that’s OK, so long as it’s done in the sacred name of comedy.
Speaking of conscious fabrication done in the “sacred names” of things, the bloggers at Sadly, No! would like to know why this conscious fabrication was deployed in the sacred name of advertising the National Review! I’d be interested in hearing if Frum actually believes that “Gore-type environmental[ism]” is really about “taking cars away” and “stop[ping] the trend of American life.” Actually, is Frum capable of associating himself with a statement on Al Gore that’s not some sort of ridiculous fabrication? Just wondering!

Maddow demonstrates respectful restraint in her own defense. Really, if she had wanted to deploy some lowball humor at Frum’s expense, she could have pointed out that the way Frum hunched himself forward, grimacing and closing his eyes as if he was girding himself, made him look like a constipated man heroically battling to pop a squat. That would have been lowball and disrespectful! Still wouldn’t have been the equivalent of dressing a monkey up in an Obama sticker, or yelling “Treason!” in a crowded hall!

Anti-Democrat Humor

Take a break from serious politics and enjoy!

Don’t bother reading the following unless you have watched the ENTIRE video. Match the number of the joke/picture in the video with the number here for explanations.

1. “If they’re on an island, how do they speak English?”
Its a joke.
2.Pigs are more civilized than Democrats.
3. Democrats are always saying how they really are good people deep down – although they never show it.
4. Self explanatory.
5. Democrats are always making stupid comments, and the media jumps on them.
6. MOST (not all) Democrats are dirt bags.
7. They both take money, Democrats waste it on pointless Government projects.
8. Self explanatory.
9. Self explanatory.

13. Democrats whine about EVERYTHING.
14. Yes, I’m well aware that big-foot was fake, but still, it seems more real than a smart democrat by FAR.

16. Self explanatory.
17. Self explanatory.
18. Self explanatory.

22. Self explanatory (if you lived through the 90′s)
23. Democrats (especially Hillary and Barack) NEVER stop bickering.
24. Howard Dean hates you and I both.
25. Evolve from primitive creatures to civilized humans.
26. It’s a bumper sticker that you put on the back of your SUV.
27. Republicans want to fight terrorists there via the War in Iraq. The Democrats want to fight the war here via terrorist attacks – what idiots!
28. Self explanatory.
29. Self explanatory.
30. Self explanatory.
31. Fox News is the Conservative slanted news station – democrats fear being out-debated by people with three times their IQ’s. (e.g. Bill O’Reily vs. Hillary. Bill won)
32. Most public school teachers are democrats and should NOT be teaching America’s future how to be stupid.
33. Self explanatory.
34. [Stupid] People are always saying how Hillary Clinton is the answer. Answer to what? Who do I vote for to destroy America?
35. If cars ran on stupidity, Democrats would never have to worry about filling their tanks.
36. If you actually know what you’re talking about, than it should be self explanatory.
37. In 2004 the Democrats cried “If Bush wins a second term I’m moving to Canada!”. Red states = Bush, Blue = Kerry.
38. Democrats take from hard working families and give to lazy idiots that dropped out of high school.
39. Obama’s book “The Audacity of Hope” is a bunch of crap. See #47.
40. Self explanatory.

H.W. Bush: Won the Cold War bringing down communism in Russia.
Clinton: Brought down his pants.
W. Bush: Brought down terrorism.
McCain WILL: Bring down terrorism
Obama WILL: Bring down America.
42. Obama LIES, in fact all Democrats do that – name one (that came AFTER Vietnam) that didn’t/doesn’t lie.
43. Obama lacks experience to be President – simple as that.
44. See #43.
45. Self explanatory.
46. Self explanatory.
47. McCain has actual leadership experience – Obama lacks that so he bases his campaign on “Hope”. See #39.
48. Self explanatory.
49. Al Gore is as stupid as, no! Stupider than a rock.
50. I apologize if this statement offended anyone. I feel strongly against abortion and I believe it is truly wrong. Oh, and to all you hippies, if you want to stop “the killing,” stop abortion. Since the start of the Iraq war, 6,587,650 American children have been murdered by abortion.
51. Hillary is a worse punishment than a nuclear weapon.
52. Liberals (specifically Barack Obama) refuse to say the pledge. The United States IS ONE NATION UNDER GOD, whether you’re atheist or Christian.
53. Self explanatory.
54. Self explanatory.
55. “You swore when you told us not to at the beginning, you’re more of a hypocrite than Obama or Hillary.” Okay? I did not make the picture, I thought it was funny so I incorporated it into the video.
56. This is about when Obama said that small town Pennsylvania clung to guns and religion.
57. I know this one was hard to read. The top map was for 2004. I have a dream that in 2008 all the states will vote Republican.
58. I’m sorry, I made a mistake. 10 out of 10 idiots are Democrats, they don’t necessarily support Obama.
59. Self explanatory.
60. “Dem-o-crap? Wow, you’re real mature.” I can do without the sarcasm, but get all that liberalism out of you and get some common sense.

Stephen Colbert, Drew Carey, Garry Trudeau: Political Humor and Campaigning Part 5 (2004)

Stephen Colbert joined the cast of Comedy Central’s parody-news series The Daily Show in 1997, when the show was in its second season. Originally one of four correspondents who filmed segments from remote locations in the style of network news field reporters, Colbert was referred to as “the new guy” on-air for his first two years on the show, during which time Craig Kilborn served as host. When Kilborn left the show prior to the 1999 season, Jon Stewart took over hosting duties, also serving as a writer and co-executive producer. From this point, the series gradually began to take on a more political tone and increase in popularity, particularly in the latter part of the 2000 U.S. presidential election season. The roles of the show’s correspondents were expanded to include more in-studio segments, as well as international reports which were almost always done in the studio with the aid of a greenscreen.

Unlike Stewart, who essentially hosts The Daily Show as himself, Colbert developed a correspondent character for his pieces on the series. Colbert has described his correspondent character as “a fool who has spent a lot of his life playing not the fool”—one who is able to cover it at least well enough to deal with the subjects that he deals with.” Colbert was frequently pitted against knowledgeable interview subjects, or against Stewart in scripted exchanges, with the resultant dialogue demonstrating the character’s lack of knowledge of whatever subject he is discussing. Colbert also made generous use of humorous fallacies of logic in explaining his point of view on any topic. Other Daily Show correspondents have adopted a similar style; former correspondent Rob Corddry recalls that when he and Ed Helms first joined the show’s cast in 2002, they “just imitated Stephen Colbert for a year or two.” Correspondent Aasif Mandvi has stated “I just decided I was going to do my best Stephen Colbert impression.”

Colbert has appeared in several recurring segments for The Daily Show, including “Even Stevphen” with Steve Carell, in which both characters were expected to debate a selected topic but instead would unleash their anger at one another. Colbert commonly hosted “This Week in God”, a report on topics in the news pertaining to religion, presented with the help of the “God Machine”. Colbert filed reports from the floor of the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention as a part of The Daily Show’s award-winning coverage of the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Presidential elections; many from the latter were included as part of their The Daily Show: Indecision 2004 DVD release. In several episodes of The Daily Show, Colbert filled in as anchor in the absence of Jon Stewart, including the full week of March 3, 2002, when Stewart was scheduled to host Saturday Night Live. After Colbert left the show, Rob Corddry took over “This Week in God” segments, although a recorded sample of Colbert’s voice is still used as the sound effect for the God Machine. Later episodes of The Daily Show have reused older Colbert segments under the label “Klassic Kolbert”. Colbert won three Emmys as a writer of The Daily Show in 2004, 2005, and 2006.

Stephen Tyrone Colbert (born on May 13, 1964) is an American political satirist, writer, comedian and television host. He is the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, a satirical news show in which Colbert portrays a caricatured version of conservative political pundits.

Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the critically acclaimed sketch comedy series Exit 57.

Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted, gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. It was his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s news-parody series The Daily Show, however, that first introduced him to a wide audience.

In 2005, he left The Daily Show with Jon Stewart to host a spin-off series, The Colbert Report. Following The Daily Show’s news-parody concept, The Colbert Report is a parody of personality-driven political opinion shows such as The O’Reilly Factor. Since its debut, the series has established itself as one of Comedy Central’s highest-rated series, earning Colbert three Emmy nominations and an invitation to perform as featured entertainer at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in 2006. Colbert was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2006. His book, I Am America (And So Can You!), was No. 1 on The New York Times Best Seller List.

Drew Allison Carey (born May 23, 1958) is an American actor, comedian, photographer, and game show host. After serving in the U.S. Marines and making a name for himself in stand-up comedy, Carey eventually gained popularity starring on his own sitcom, The Drew Carey Show, and serving as host on the U.S. version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, both of which aired on ABC.

Carey has appeared in several films, television series, music videos, a made-for-television film, and a computer game. He currently hosts the game show The Price Is Right. He is interested in a variety of sports, has worked as a photographer at U.S. National Team soccer games, and is a minority owner of the Major League Soccer team Seattle Sounders FC. Carey is engaged and has written an autobiography detailing his early life and television career.

Philip Stephen Hendrie (born September 1, 1952) is an American radio personality. He is best known as the host of The Phil Hendrie Show, a comedy talk radio program that is syndicated throughout North America on Talk Radio Network. While The Phil Hendrie Show became renowned for its unique and controversial guests, those guests are not real people at all. They are fictional characters created and voiced by Hendrie himself.

Hendrie has performed voices on the animated FOX sitcoms King of the Hill and Futurama, and as I.N.T.E.L.L.I.G.E.N.C.E. and the Terrorist in Team America: World Police. In Spring of 2006, he had a supporting role in the live-action NBC sitcom Teachers.

Fourth District Harbor Commissioner Race [Spoof]

Narrator: “So, have you heard? Three candidates are vying to become 4th District Harbor commissioner. You’ve seen all the spin and distortion, but what are the facts?

Susan Penn will be a hard-working advocate for jobs AND the environment. But what about her opponents?

Richard Marks wants us to believe hes an average joe — a former mill worker and softball player. But what his handlers DON’T want you to know is that he led a guerrilla army uprising in Peru that overthrew a democratically elected government. Marks — or as hes still known throughout South America, “el terrible” — is an indicted war criminal facing extradition in the Hague. If Richard “el terrible” Marks can’t be trusted with a rebel battalion and a fleet of Black Hawk helicopters, can he really be trusted with your vote?

Opponent John Ash isn’t much better. Holding himself out as an architect and kayak enthusiast, what Ash won’t tell you is that as a currency trader in the 1980s, he was responsible for single-handedly destroying the Singapore economy. A ruthless billionaire and economic wizard, the Wall Street Journal dubbed Ash “the Humboldt hitman” and said he “makes George Soros look like a rank amateur.”

Finally, there’s Susan Penn. Susan will restore Humboldt Bay’s natural beauty while boosting the economy with vital jobs.

Unlike her opponents, Susan has stated on record that she would never overthrow a democratic government or destroy its economy. And Susan Penn loves kittens.

Susan Penn. The right choice for Humboldt bay.”

Michael Ellis “Mike” Murphy (born 1962) is a Republican political consultant. He has advised such nationally prominent Republicans as John McCain, Jeb Bush, John Engler, Tommy Thompson, Spencer Abraham, Christie Whitman, Lamar Alexander, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was, until January 2006, an adviser to Mitt Romney, the Governor of Massachusetts and an about-to-become candidate for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2008 presidential election. He stepped down as a result of his role as chief strategist to Governor Romney as well as Senator McCain, who were both widely expected to be Republican challengers in the primaries of the 2008 Presidential election. Murphy said he had decided to be neutral in a contest between two close clients, although he would advise each informally.

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian American bodybuilder, actor, model, businessman, and politician, who is currently serving as the 38th Governor of California.

Schwarzenegger began weight-training at 15. He was awarded the title of Mr. Universe at age 22 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest a total of seven times. Schwarzenegger has remained a prominent face in the sport of bodybuilding long after his retirement, and has written several books and numerous articles on the sport.

Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film icon, noted for his lead role in such films as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. He was nicknamed the “Austrian Oak” and the “Styrian Oak” in his bodybuilding days, “Arnold Strong” and “Arnie” during his acting career, and more recently the “Governator” (a portmanteau of “Governor” and “Terminator”).

As a Republican, he was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall election to replace then-Governor Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17, 2003, to serve the remainder of Davis’s term. Schwarzenegger was then re-elected on November 7, 2006, in California’s 2006 gubernatorial election, to serve a full term as governor, defeating Democrat Phil Angelides, who was California State Treasurer at the time. Schwarzenegger was sworn in for his first elected term on January 5, 2007.

Schwarzenegger is married to journalist Maria Shriver. The two have four children (two girls and two boys).

Gregory Everett “Greg” Proops (born October 3, 1959) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, voice actor, and producer. He is best known for his improvisational work on the UK and U.S. versions of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He also currently stars as Max Madigan on the Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP.
