Rachel Maddow smacks down Republican hack David Frum

Rachel Maddow sparred with former Bush speechwriter/National Review contributor David Frum, after Frum thought he’d cleverly ambush Maddow with the accusation that she was contributing to the low tone of the political discourse.
MADDOW: You have publicly stated some reservations about John McCain and criticisms about the way his campaign is run, even though you have also said that you will vote for him. One quote I wanted to ask you about. You said, “Those who press this Ayers line of attack are whipping Republicans and conservatives into a fury that’s going to be very hard to calm after November.” What do you mean by that, in that word, “fury.”
FRUM: Well, I think that you were talking through much of the show about the matter of tone in our politics. And yet, we are seeing, I think, an intensification of the ugliness of tone that has been a feature of American politics for the past eight years. I mean, this show, unfortunately, is an example of that problem.
Basically, Frum objected to Maddow’s injection of humor and sarcasm into her show as an example of how political culture was circling the drain. Maddow, obviously, had some disagreement with this contention, suggesting that her use of comic effect was not in any way equivalent to say…calling for someone’s head on the campaign trail.
Of course, Frum seems to have a problem with political comedy in general. Back in July, he took to his “Diary” to caterwaul over the way Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert treat the conversation:
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert obviously see themselves as something more than ordinary funny men. Recall Stewart’s memorable scolding of Crossfire for hurting America; remember Stephen Colbert’s preachy appearance at the White House correspondents dinner. They think something is very wrong with cable news, and so they satirize that wrong.
In making their point, they themselves violate every kind of journalistic ethical rule. They say, “It’s OK for us – we’re fake news.” That’s a convenient excuse. But it’s not really an adequate one.
Yes! It’s almost as if The Daily Show and the Colbert Report have an established, intrinsic comedic conventions that are a thing apart from the two men’s appearances in all other fora! And because they don’t adhere to those conventions ALL THE TIME, like on Crossfire, or at the Duane Reade, they are violating some journalistic ethics.
Frum went on to say:
A few days ago, Colbert scoffed at my friend David Brooks for referring to the “salad bar” at Applebee’s – when Applebee’s doesn’t feature salad bars. An error – how ridiculous! But conscious fabrication? I guess that’s OK, so long as it’s done in the sacred name of comedy.
Speaking of conscious fabrication done in the “sacred names” of things, the bloggers at Sadly, No! would like to know why this conscious fabrication was deployed in the sacred name of advertising the National Review! I’d be interested in hearing if Frum actually believes that “Gore-type environmental[ism]” is really about “taking cars away” and “stop[ping] the trend of American life.” Actually, is Frum capable of associating himself with a statement on Al Gore that’s not some sort of ridiculous fabrication? Just wondering!
Maddow demonstrates respectful restraint in her own defense. Really, if she had wanted to deploy some lowball humor at Frum’s expense, she could have pointed out that the way Frum hunched himself forward, grimacing and closing his eyes as if he was girding himself, made him look like a constipated man heroically battling to pop a squat. That would have been lowball and disrespectful! Still wouldn’t have been the equivalent of dressing a monkey up in an Obama sticker, or yelling “Treason!” in a crowded hall!

Philip Stephen Hendrie (born September 1, 1952) is an American radio personality. He is best known as the host of The Phil Hendrie Show, a comedy talk radio program that is syndicated throughout North America on Talk Radio Network. While The Phil Hendrie Show became renowned for its unique and controversial guests, those guests are not real people at all. They are fictional characters created and voiced by Hendrie himself.
Hendrie has performed voices on the animated FOX sitcoms King of the Hill and Futurama, and as I.N.T.E.L.L.I.G.E.N.C.E. and the Terrorist in Team America: World Police. In Spring of 2006, he had a supporting role in the live-action NBC sitcom Teachers.
Hendrie moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota and then to Miami, Florida where he further developed his show. The show then moved to KFI in Los Angeles, California and was nationally syndicated to approximately 100 radio stations. Hendrie was married in 1997 to radio talk show host Maria Sanchez. Their wedding was held at the Queen Mary and was broadcast live on KFI. In February 2005, Hendrie was moved from his flagship station, KFI, to XTRA Sports 570 AM, a sports talk radio station also centered in Los Angeles.
In early 2006, Hendrie announced that he was retiring from radio; yet the retirement proved to be temporary. He said that he felt he had reached the limits of what he could do in “terrestrial talk radio” and expressing a desire to shift his career focus toward acting. On June 4, 2007, it was announced that Phil Hendrie would return to radio June 25, 2007 from 10 PM to 1 AM PST on Talk Radio Network, with shows airing weeknightly. The new incarnation of Hendrie’s program is a combination of character voices from his old show and lighthearted political commentary.
In 1970, Garry Trudeau’s creation of Doonesbury was syndicated by the newly formed Universal Press Syndicate. Today Doonesbury is syndicated to almost 1,400 newspapers worldwide and is accessible online in association with Slate Magazine at doonesbury.com.
In 1975, he became the first comic strip artist to win a Pulitzer, traditionally awarded to editorial-page cartoonists. He was also a Pulitzer finalist in 1990. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1977 in the category of Animated Short Film, for A Doonesbury Special, in collaboration with John Hubley and Faith Hubley. A Doonesbury Special eventually won the Cannes Film Festival Jury Special Prize in 1978. Other awards include the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Comic Strip Award in 1994, and the Reuben Award in 1995.
He was made a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1993. Wiley Miller, fellow comic-strip artist responsible for Non Sequitur, called Trudeau “far and away the most influential editorial cartoonist in the last 25 years.”
In addition to his work on Doonesbury, Trudeau has teamed up with Elizabeth Swados and written plays (such as Rap Master Ronnie and Doonesbury: A Musical Comedy). In 1988, Trudeau joined forces with director Robert Altman for the HBO miniseries Tanner ’88 and the Sundance Channel miniseries sequel Tanner on Tanner in 2004. In 1996, Newsweek and the Washington Post speculated that Trudeau penned the novel Primary Colors, which was later revealed to have been written by Joe Klein.

Carey began appearing in commercials for restaurants in the late 1990s in Canada with The Great Root Bear, but his two-year contract with A&W Food Services of Canada was cut short in November 1998 after an episode of The Drew Carey Show featured McDonald’s. As a result of his dismissal, Carey sued A&W for compensation.
On April 22, 1999 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then “Disney-MGM Studios”), part of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Carey debuted a 12-minute attraction entitled Sounds Dangerous! In the show, a camera follows Carey through a day as an undercover detective. When his video camera fails, the audience is left in complete darkness wearing earphones, following his adventure through sound cues. The attraction is presently running on a limited “seasonal” schedule.
In 1999, Carey made a cameo appearance in “Weird Al” Yankovic’s music video for “It’s All About the Pentiums.” In 2004, he made an appearance for Fountains of Wayne’s video for “Mexican Wine” giving an introduction to the video as if it were on a stage.
On May 7, 2000, Carey’s television film Geppetto debuted on The Wonderful World of Disney. The film, an adaptation of Pinocchio, included actor Wayne Brady who had joined Carey on Whose Line Is It Anyway? and a few episodes of The Drew Carey Show. Carey took singing lessons to prepare for the role.
In 2000 Carey was given a cameo appearance in the House Party expansion pack of the computer game The Sims. To make him appear, the Sims must throw a successful party, which causes Carey to arrive in a limo and join the festivities. Carey is a fan of The Sims series and during one April Fool’s episode of The Drew Carey Show, a scene takes place completely within The Sims.
In 2001 he made an appearance in the WWE’s annual Royal Rumble event. He eliminated himself after Kane made his way to the ring.
Carey provided the entertainment for the 2002 Annual White House correspondents’ dinner. Once Carey completed his standup routine for the 1,800 guests, President George W. Bush, noting Carey’s improv work, made a joke of his own: “Drew? Got any interest in the Middle East?” In 2003, he joined Jamie Kennedy to host the WB’s live special Play for a Billion. In September 2003, Carey led a group of comedians, including Blake Clark and the Drew Carey Show’s Kathy Kinney, on a comedy tour of Iraq.
In 2005, Carey appeared in three films: the animated film Robots, where he provided a voice-over for the character Crank; The Aristocrats where he retold a dirty joke along with other celebrities; and the documentary, Fuck, where he was interviewed.
On June 8, 2006, Drew Carey’s Sporting Adventures debuted on the Travel Channel. In this series, Carey traveled throughout Germany to photograph multiple FIFA World cup soccer games while he immerses himself in the culture of the towns and states he visits.
In September 2008, Carey began filling in as a guest DJ on Little Steven’s Underground Garage on Sirius radio.
When approached about his political views, Carey has distanced himself from conservative celebrities by emphasizing his fiscally conservative, libertarian leanings. He has expressed his distaste for the Bush administration’s management of the War in Iraq, specifically on the September 15, 2007, episode of Real Time with Bill Maher. In 2007, Carey made donations to Ron Paul’s presidential campaign. On the September 26, 2008 episode of The Late Late Show, Carey described a libertarian to host Craig Ferguson as “a conservative who still gets high.”

Michael Ellis “Mike” Murphy (born 1962) is a Republican political consultant. He has advised such nationally prominent Republicans as John McCain, Jeb Bush, John Engler, Tommy Thompson, Spencer Abraham, Christie Whitman, Lamar Alexander, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was, until January 2006, an adviser to Mitt Romney, the Governor of Massachusetts and an about-to-become candidate for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2008 presidential election. He stepped down as a result of his role as chief strategist to Governor Romney as well as Senator McCain, who were both widely expected to be Republican challengers in the primaries of the 2008 Presidential election. Murphy said he had decided to be neutral in a contest between two close clients, although he would advise each informally.
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian American bodybuilder, actor, model, businessman, and politician, who is currently serving as the 38th Governor of California.
Schwarzenegger began weight-training at 15. He was awarded the title of Mr. Universe at age 22 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest a total of seven times. Schwarzenegger has remained a prominent face in the sport of bodybuilding long after his retirement, and has written several books and numerous articles on the sport.
Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film icon, noted for his lead role in such films as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. He was nicknamed the “Austrian Oak” and the “Styrian Oak” in his bodybuilding days, “Arnold Strong” and “Arnie” during his acting career, and more recently the “Governator” (a portmanteau of “Governor” and “Terminator”).
As a Republican, he was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall election to replace then-Governor Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17, 2003, to serve the remainder of Davis’s term. Schwarzenegger was then re-elected on November 7, 2006, in California’s 2006 gubernatorial election, to serve a full term as governor, defeating Democrat Phil Angelides, who was California State Treasurer at the time. Schwarzenegger was sworn in for his first elected term on January 5, 2007.
Schwarzenegger is married to journalist Maria Shriver. The two have four children (two girls and two boys).

He is best known for his improvisational work on the UK and U.S. versions of Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He also currently stars as Max Madigan on the Nickelodeon sitcom True Jackson, VP.

Stephen Colbert is co-author of the satirical text-and-picture novel Wigfield: The Can Do Town That Just May Not, which was published in 2003 by Hyperion Books. The novel was a collaboration between Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Paul Dinello, and tells the story of a small town threatened by the impending destruction of a massive dam. The narrative is presented as a series of fictional interviews with the town’s residents, accompanied by photos. The three authors toured performing an adaptation of Wigfield on stage the same year the book was released.
Colbert appeared in a small supporting role in the 2005 film adaptation of Bewitched. He has made guest appearances on the television series Curb Your Enthusiasm, Spin City, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and on the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?. He voiced the characters of Reducto and Phil Ken Sebben in the Adult Swim’s Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law but left the show in 2005 to work on The Colbert Report. His characters were both killed, though he returned to voice Phil for the series finale. Colbert also has provided voices for Cartoon Network’s The Venture Bros., Comedy Central’s Crank Yankers, and American Dad!, as well as for Canadian animated comedy series The Wrong Coast. He appeared as Homer Simpson’s life coach in the Simpsons episode “He Loves to Fly and He D’ohs.”
Colbert filled in for Sam Seder on the second episode of The Majority Report on Air America Radio, and has also done reports for The Al Franken Show. He appeared on a track on Wig in a Box, a tribute album for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Colbert read the part of Leopold Bloom in Bloomsday on Broadway XXIV: Love Literature Language Lust: Leopold’s Women Bloom on June 16, 2005 at Symphony Space in New York City. He appeared in a series of TV commercials for General Motors, as a not-too-bright investigator searching for the elusive (and non-existent in real life) “Mr. Goodwrench”. He also portrayed the letter Z in Sesame Street: All-Star Alphabet, a 2005 video release.
Colbert is a producer of The 1 Second Film, the world’s largest nonprofit collaborative art film. His video request that IMDb list his credit for The 1 Second Film (“it is as valid as most of my credits”) enabled thousands of the film’s producers to be listed in the massive movie database until they were removed in early 2007.
Colbert has released one book associated with The Colbert Report, I Am America (And So Can You!). It was released on October 7, 2007 by Grand Central Publishing. Grand Central Publishing is the successor to Warner Books, which published America (The Book), written by The Daily Show staff. The book contains similar political satire, but was written primarily by Colbert himself rather than as a collaboration with his Colbert Report writing staff.
On November 23, 2008, his Christmas special, A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All!, aired on Comedy Central. It was released on DVD in November 2008.
In January 2010, Colbert was named the assistant sports psychologist for the US Olympic speed skating team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. He was also invited to be part of NBC’s 2010 Winter Olympics coverage team by Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports.
